A Dry Word from the Thirsty Gentleman by the Bar
I don’t want to
burden you
with overflowing
echoes of my emptiness,
but if your efflorescence
yearns for my warmth,
I’ll fill you with
my want
until
we’re both spilled,
replenished,
wrung.
But if
your echoed thirst
is misread
please enjoy this free drink.

Written for dVerse’s Quadrille #32, hosted by De Jackson, aka WhimsyGizmo. The wordplay of the day is echo.
When most of us think of the word echo, haunting, wistful imagery tends to come to mind. I wanted to try finding a silly counterbeat.

Ha! I really love this! The voice you’ve invoked here is wonderful!

Nice last line to the poem. I also liked “I’ll fill you with/my want” and the “I’m not havin’ it” video.

Thanks. I was hoping to make the speaker’s tone waffle from urgent/immediate to nonchalant/unassuming… like a thirsty dude trying not to try so hard.

Heh. If I were 20yrs younger and single, I’d experiment and report my data.

Super piece, Barry! I can relate to this exchange. Seen it enough times when I stood behind the bar for reals!

Been there Barry. You just never know. The poem has a shot in the dark hopefulness to it. It leaves me hoping she’ll take the drink and make a new friend

Memories of past times sitting at a bar and a free drink floats my way. Many misread, non-echoed messages about my thirsts just because of my presence. Interesting write.
